Solutions

Here are some example internet access problems, and the solutions which awayWEB can provide.

You can find out more about how awayWEB works in the products section.

Reading your e-mail

Almost all modern e-mail systems include a 'web access' feature. This feature means that the contents of your mail system (inbox, outbox, saved messages and folders, todo list etc.) can be accessed through a web browser as well as through a traditional mail program, such as 'outlook' or 'notes'. Those e-mail systems which don't have an included webmail feature can almost certainly be accessed via the standard 'IMAPv4' system, which allows third-party webmail applications to access your mailbox.

Webmail is a very convenient service, but making coporate e-mail servers available on the Internet raises serious security questions. How secure is the webmail function? How do I protect the mail server from other attacks? These issues can be easily addressed by accessing your chosen webmail system through the awayWEB gateway. With awayWEB security, you can be confident that only your authorised users can access your webmail application, and your mail server can remain safely inside your corporate network.

awayWEB has been tested with the following common webmail applications:

  • Microsoft Outlook WEB Access
  • Domino Webmail
  • IMAPv4 server with IMP
  • Entellect Mobile Office - WAP phone access to Exchange mailboxes

Almost any web application works well with awayWEB, so you can use the webmail software of your choice...

Access your corporate directory

Most organisations have some form of corporate directory, with phone information, job titles, possibly e-mail addresses or organisation chart details. This directory is often available on the corporate intranet, but what Internet security experience does your intranet programmer have?

Let awayWEB take care of the security and just access your existing intranet service - no security or other changes required, and no extra work for your intranet staff.

Let a business partner access your order entry system

You've got a great new web-enabled sales processing system. All your intranet users have access. You've just promised to give a business partner direct access, so they can enter their own orders. What happens next?

In years gone by, you could have waited months whilst you arranged some kind of modem access, then lived with the costs of supporting your partners modem and applications. It would be great to use the Internet instead, but the VPN software you use doesn't work with your partners firewall. Your partner doesn't want to install their own VPN software, and they don't want to give their user a non-standard PC. Sound familiar?

You could put your sales system on the internet, but then how will you stop the rest of the world from entering their orders directly? Does your sales processing software vendor have any internet security experience?

With awayWEB, your partner just uses a browser - you control the access, and allow them only to use the order entry area of your sales system. They are prevented from accessing any other areas and they can't access other systems on your intranet.

Monitor a printer

Most networked printers can now be managed through a web browser interface. The 'IPP' (Internet Printing Protocol) standard provides easy remote monitoring and configuration of networked printers - check the queues, monitor paper stocks, check usage or reset the printer remotely.

Through awayWEB, your system administrator can safely reset your printer from an internet cafe on a pacific island beach.
